HOW IT ALL STARTED
It wasn’t a light bulb moment. It wasn’t a strike of inspiration in the shower. It was much more boring than that.
I’m Damien. I’m the founder of Wealth Noir. I’m a dad, a former Facebook product manager, MIT alum, MBA, and self-proclaimed personal finance nerd. My personal blog is at DamienPeters.com is all yours if you are interested. But you want to hear about Wealth Noir, not me.
I like to talk and I like personal finance.
This led to a series of conversations with friends and colleagues about finances as I was working on mine. At the time, mid-2016, I had a rental property and was buying my second, had money in stocks, ETFs, and bonds; and had a little money in a hedge fund, all of which was split across a brokerage, my 401k, and an IRA. I had spent a lot of time learning and growing my investments over the last 10 years.
The more I talked to people, the more I realized how much more I cared about wealth than they did. These friends were lawyers, worked in tech like me, or had other well-paying jobs and means to capital.
Yet they weren’t doing $#!* with their money.
My portfolios and real estate holdings were interesting and shocking to people. They were impressed at all my financial terms and models and the amount of time I spent learning and making my money grow. I heard stories of 401ks left empty, checking accounts with unseemly amounts of money earning next to nothing, and fear about layoffs of losing their only stream of income.
For me, the worst part was how much more this happened across my friends who looked like me: black.
When I found out I was going to be a dad, I got all self-reflective. I really started to think about what I wanted to be doing with my time and wanted my son to be proud of. So, after a lllloooootttt of internal debate, I left my amazing and high-paying role at Facebook to pursue Wealth Noir.
WHAT IS WEALTH NOIR?
Wealth Noir exists to preach and teach about the importance of financial freedom and generational wealth to Black millennial professionals, like myself. Our generation has the best chance at closing the wealth gap. We have the education, the jobs, the income, and the access to advanced financial tools that never existed before. Financial freedom removes you from being dependent on a job you hate and allows you to find the life you want to live when finances aren’t holding you back. Generational wealth is the principle that we should leave wealth for future generations.
Now, we are all about giving you the information you need to create wealth. Soon, we will launch our own products and services to meet your financial needs. We are black-owned and proud of it.
We created a place for you to start in exploring the site. Check it out.
